Patterns

Just as with colors, any and every pattern and combination that are found in cats is acceptable in a sphynx.

  • Tabby patterns:

    • Classic tabby: The classic tabby pattern is also known as blotched tabby. This pattern is characterized by large, swirling patterns on the cat’s body. The pattern can be on the cat’s forehead, cheeks, and body. The swirls can be different in size and shape and are usually darker than the cat’s skin color.

The background color of the cat’s skin is usually lighter than the swirls. Legs are evenly barred with bracelets coming up to meet the body markings. Large solid blotch on each side to be encircled by one or more unbroken rings. Side markings should be the same on both sides.

    • Mackerel tabby: This pattern features narrow, vertical stripes against a lighter background. They have lines running down the head to meet the shoulders. patterns may appear to fade. The legs of a tabby Sphynx are evenly barred with narrow bracelets that meet the body markings. The tail is also barred. The neck and chest have distinct necklaces resembling chains, and the head has an “M” pattern on the forehead, with bars marking the face. Spine lines run together to form a narrow saddle. Narrow penciling runs around the body.
    • Spotted tabby: This pattern features random spots or blotches of dark color against a lighter background which can be round or oblong.
Spots do not run together in a broken Mackerel pattern. A dorsal stripe runs the length of the body to the tip of the tail.
  • Tortoiseshell patterns:

    • Black tortoiseshell: A mix of black and orange or cream patches.
    • Blue tortoiseshell: A mix of blue-gray and cream patches.
    • Chocolate tortoiseshell: A mix of chocolate brown and cream patches.
    • Lilac tortoiseshell: A mix of pale gray and cream patches.

    Other patterns:

    • Bi-color: A cat with one predominant color and one other color on its paws, tail, and/or face.
    • Calico: A cat with a mix of white, black, and orange or cream patches. There are different types of Calico patterns:

Van Calico is characterized by a predominantly white coat with patches of unbrindled black and red on the extremities such as the head, tail, and legs. This type of calico allows one or two small patches of color on the body.

Dilute Calico, on the other hand, is primarily white with patches of unbrindled blue and cream. The underparts are usually white, and the patches of color are allowed to vary.

The Dilute Van Calico is comparable to the Van Calico with its predominantly white coat and patches of blue and cream on the extremities. One or two small patches of color on the body are also permitted.

The Bi-Color Calico is composed of two distinct colors, including solid color and white, tabby and white, tortoiseshell and white, pointed and white, or any other color combinations.

Finally, the Van Bi-Color Calico features solid color and white, tabby and white, tortoiseshell and white, or any other color combination, with the color being confined to the extremities such as the head, tail, and legs, and one or two small patches of color being allowed on the body.

    • Tuxedo: A cat with a white chest and/or belly and other solid color on the rest of its body.

    • Sable: The mature Sable Sphynx cat should have a rich, warm, sable brown color without any shadings, barring, or markings. While kittens may be lighter in color, the mature Sable cat should have a consistent color throughout. The nose leather should be brown, and the paw pads should also be brown.

    • Pointed Pattern: The pointed pattern in Sphynx cats is characterized by little to no color contrast between the body and the points. As the cat matures, the pointed areas will darken and become solid in color. This pattern can be combined with any other pattern except for mink, and can come in a variety of colors such as lilac-silver lynx point and seal-tortie point with white. The eye color for pointed Sphynx cats is vivid blue, while the nose leather and paw pads should be appropriate to the coat color.

    • Mink Pattern: Similar to the pointed pattern, the mink pattern in Sphynx cats also shows little to no color differentiation between the body and points as the cat matures. The mink pattern can be combined with any other pattern except for pointed, and can come in colors such as natural mink, blue mink, champagne mink, and platinum mink, as well as natural tabby mink, blue-cream, tortie mink, and white in the Bi-Color Class. The eye color for mink Sphynx cats is aqua, while the nose leather and paw pads should be appropriate to the coat color.

    • Platinum: The mature Platinum Sphynx cat should have a pale, silvery gray color without any shadings, barring, or markings. The nose leather and paw pads should be a lavender-pink color.
